Why 531?

The US 3rd Infantry Division

  • The United States 3rd Infantry Division slogged its way through the Second World War in the west the hard way. It was the only division in the entire US Army that fought Axis forces on all European fronts. In total they were awarded 40 medals, more than any other unit, and they also won the Congressional Medal of Honor – America’s highest award for valour.

  • 40 medals was testimony to the many campaigns and battles in which this extraordinary unit fought. The ‘Rock of the Marne’ division took part in Operation TORCH, the invasion of Northwest Africa in November 1942, battled through Sicily, Southern Italy, landed at Anzio south of Rome and took part in the invasion of Southern France in August 1944.

  • They also pushed on into Southern Germany and captured Hitler’s home in Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps at the end of the war. In all, they spent 531 days in combat, an extraordinary number, which is why we’ve decided to produce only 531 pieces of Batch No. 1 - to honour the men who fought in the 3rd Division in World War II.
